BMW MOTORRAD WORLDSBK TEAM
2019 sees the ‘official’ return of BMW to World Superbikes, and following nine years riding for Kawasaki, 2013 WSBK champion Tom Sykes has made the move to the Bavarian manufacturers team as their No1 rider.
In this it’s first year back, the factory effort is being looked after by experienced team owner Shaun Muir, via his company Shaun Muir Racing (SMR). Successes for SMR have included two times winning the British Superbike Championship, whilst last year the Guisborough, Cleveland based set up ran the work’s Aprilia WSBK programme. Alongside Sykes as the second rider, is three time German Superbike champion and winner of last years FIM European Superstock 1000 series, Markus Reiterberger. The 25 year old is no stranger to WSBK’s, having campaigned BMW machinery for the private Althea team in both 2016 & ‘17 – unfortunately, both seasons ended prematurely due to injury!
Markus realises that being a member of a works team, brings added pressures. It will be interesting to see how he responds. For Tom Sykes the move to BMW will prove motivational and knowing that the team will be focussing all their attentions upon himself 2019 should see him back to his very best. Whilst the 2019 BMW S1000RR is still very new, and will require on going race development, his followers can rest assured, Sykes has lost non of his desire to win the WSBK championship for a second time, and what’s more, ‘The Grinner’ still retains the scorching pace to do just that!
