Team owner, Steve Rogers is a strong believer in continuity, thus his priority was to retain the services of Tarran MacKenzie & Jason O’Halloran at McAMS Yamaha for a ‘max attack’ on the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Series.
Equally, both riders were super keen to build upon the experience gained in 2019, particularly with the team’s weapon of choice this year being the exciting, all new Yamaha YZF-R1.
For ‘Young Gun’ MacKenzie, this will be his third year as a member of the Fleetwood, Lancs.,based squad, and whilst ‘Taz’ did progress into the ‘Showdown Phase’ last year, finishing 5th overall, he can justifiably feel that he deserved better, particularly after scooping his debut BSB victory at the opening Silverstone round.
However, his aspirations were severely dented when he was ruled out of both the Brands Hatch meeting in June, suffering from concussion following a crash during qualifying, and then again at Thruxton in August with a broken wrist, again sustained during qualifying.
Injury also played a major part in the season of Aussie O’Halloran, who made his debut for McAMS last year, finally placing a disappointing, if heroic, 10th overall.
‘The O’Show’ is without doubt a quality act, yet not even he could overcome what turned out to be a season long handicap of a broken shoulder sustained at the second round at Donington. Indeed for the rest of the year he had to dramatically alter his riding style to compensate, meaning he was all but racing ‘one handed’ - a feat which made even more remarkable his third place finish at Assen!
MacKenzie & O’Halloran are extremely talented, fearless and single minded competitors. Their target for 2020 is simple…….to put to rights the disappointments of last term, and for both to secure a place in the Showdown Phase.
