Each May the public roads that link the towns of Portstewart, Portrush & Coleraine are closed to normal traffic to facilitate the running of Ireland’s largest and most spectacular outdoor sporting event, the International NW200 Road Races…which for 2019 takes on the official title of…….. ‘fonaCAB International NW200 Road Races in association with Nicholl Oils”.
This year the NW200 event celebrates it’s 90th anniversary, since the races were first run in 1929. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast, the 8.9 miles long circuit, or ‘ the triangle’, as it is normally called, features long winding straights, including the famous 2 mile run from the breathtaking 150mph Station Corner up to University Corner where packs of riders perform amazing ‘slipstream’ overtakes at speeds oft times in excess of 200mph.
Attracting the World’s best ‘roads’ racers to contest the ‘massed start’ races, understandably the event becomes a magnet to the vast number of enthusiasts and fans of ‘racing between the hedges’, with estimates claiming numbers well in excess of 85,000 visitors annually.
