Paul Bird, owner of the most successful team in the history of British Superbikes, has won the prestigious BSB Title on no less than 6 separate occasions, and was intent on adding to that tally last year.
Unfortunately the crash involving Shane Byrne whilst testing at Snetterton in May, proved season ending for his No1 rider, and effectively halted that aspiration. The Cumbrian business man knew a change of line up for 2019 to his Paul Bird Motorsport run Be Wiser Ducati Team was necessary if they were to win title No7 – and in true ‘Birdy’ style, pulled off a major coup, by announcing his riders would be………...Four time Grand Prix winner, Scott Redding, along with former BSB champion, Josh Brookes!
It was also confirmed the team would be racing the all new Ducati V4 Panigale, with continued factory support. For Redding, it’s a major change, and challenge, having been in the Grand Prix paddock since 2008, Initially on 125’s then Moto2 before joining MotoGP in 2014.
Career high spots being his 125cc victory at Donington Park in 2008 at just 15years and 170 days (being youngest ever GP winner at the time). Finishing Runner Up in the 2013 Moto2 World Championships, with 3 race wins, including again, the British Grand Prix, this time at Silverstone.
Then 5 years in MotoGP with Gresini Honda, Marc VDS Honda, Pramac Ducati and Gresini Aprilia. With best finishes of third place podiums in 2015 at San Marino Grand Prix, and again at Assen the following year.
Paul Bird & Scott go back a long way – back to 2004 & ‘05, he was providing help for Scott who was racing and winning in the French & Spanish Metrakit Series. And it is, in no small measure, due to this friendship, why ‘Birdy’ has been able to lure such a high profile racer to the Bennetts British Superbikes.Having raced just Silverstone & Donington Park, Scott will have to learn the other tracks – and quickly. His pre-season thoughts being...”BSB is at such a high level. I want to prove that I am capable of winning.”
Australian Josh Brookes sits on the other side of the garage, and is definitely a proven product within the BSB championships – having finished Champion in 2015, three time runner up, and one time third overall. It will be interesting to see how the rivalry, both on & off track progresses! Paul Bird and his Be Wiser Ducati Team have raised the bar this year. And have reinforced the adage that BSB is the toughest & best domestic series in the world, but equally, have added a new dimension of excitement for all spectators and race fans.
