Rider wise, it’s all change this year for last seasons Bennetts BSB Championship winning ‘Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki’ team.
East Antrim’s Glenn Irwin slots into the team to take over the seat vacated by the 2018 ‘Champ’ Leon Haslam (racing in WSB), and following three seasons racing V twin’s in BSB, Irwin returns to ride the new 4 cylinder Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10RR, (having raced Kawasaki’s with considerable success in British Supersport in 2014 & ‘15).
Last year Glenn placed a spirited third overall in the Bennetts BSB Series, which included taking Pole a couple of times plus a race win on the Saturday at ‘Showdown Brands Hatch’. Irwin commented: “I’ve served my apprenticeship in BSB, it’s now time for a major assault on the Title.” Interestingly team owner Pete Extance has gone for a ‘non-established’ Superbike team mate to Irwin.
German born, Aussie National, Currie gets the coveted ride, and moves up to Superbikes following a very impressive British Supersport campaign last year which saw him record 7 race wins plus a further 11 podium finishes en route to finishing 2nd overall.
It’s a steep learning curve the Rookie faces, but if talent and determination count for anything, then be warned, ‘BJ’ could be one of the ‘finds’ of the season.
Based at the Bournemouth Kawasaki workshop, they are the Official Kawasaki BSB squad for 2019, and continue with a level of support from the World SBK factory team.
Two time former British Sidecar Champions Ricky Stevens / Ryan Charlwood are once again supported by Bournemouth Kawasaki under the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit banner, and for 2019 are joined by the experienced Ben Holland / Lee Watson duo for a concerted attack on this years British Sidecar Championship (now with 600cc upper limit).
‘Roads’ specialist James Hillier completes the team line up and stays with the Pete Extance set up for an eleventh consecutive year. Having lapped the Mountain Circuit in excess of 132mph, and with 12 podium finishes to his credit (including winning Supertwins race in 2013), the ‘Ringwood Rocket’ is intent on adding a big bike TT victory to his already impressive CV. For ‘roads’ only, team will be tagged as Quattro Plant Wicked Coatings Kawasaki.
