RED BULL KTM
After just three full seasons racing in the Moto2 world championships, 20year old Spanish rider Iker Lecuona received the call up to ride alongside Miguel Oliveira in the Red Bull KTM MotoGP team for 2020.
Explaining, what many considered a surprise selection, Team owner Herve Poncharal pointed out “Rookie Fabio Quartararo has just finished 5th overall in MotoGP, and he had only one Moto2 win to his name last season before his MotoGP move” quickly adding, “We are proud to have Iker in the team, not that I expect him to do the same as Quartararo!”
Indeed, Lecuona who placed 12th overall in both 2019 & ‘20 Moto2 World Championships, has just a couple of podiums to his credit (2nd in Valencia in ’19 & a 3rd in Thailand last season)
The deciding factor in getting the Premier Class seat was probably his one-off MotoGP ride in Valencia last November. Deputising for the injured Oliveira, he was knocking on the door of scoring points before he crashed out.
His team mate Oliveira finished 17th overall in his MotoGP ‘Rookie’ season, with a best result of 8th in Austria. The Portuguese rider had to sit out the season ending races at Sepang & Valencia suffering hand injuries following a high speed off in practice for the Aussie MotoGP.
The Austrian manufacturers satellite team will have the use of fully factory supported RC16 machines.
