RED BULL KTM
Tech 3 have a long and successful history in racing being founded in 1989 by three partners – which included the ever jovial Herve Poncharal, who to this day, remains as it’s Team Principal.
Based in Provence in the south of France, 2019 sees Tech3 moving into a new era.
Following a 20 year partnership with Yamaha, the team has this year joined forces with KTM, to become the Austrian manufacturers satellite team in the MotoGP World Championships, having the use of fully factory supported RC16 machines. Riders for the new venture are Hafizh Syahrin partnered with Miguel Oliveira.
Syahrin became the first Malaysian rider to contest the premier class when last season, he was drafted into Herve Poncharal’s Tech 3 Yamaha Team as the ‘eleventh hour’ replacement for Jonas Folger who was still recovering health wise from illness. Promoted from Moto2, it was a solid debut season for the man nicknamed ’Pescao 55’ ( approx. translation..fish) because of his skills in the rain, eventually placing 16th overall, with a best finish of 9th in Argentina.
His new team mate is Miguel Oliveira who steps up to MotoGP, and is the first ever rider to progress through the entire Red Bull - KTM system, from Red Bull Rookies Cup, Moto3 & Moto2. Runner up in Moto3 World Championship in 2015, and again last year in Moto2 (missing out on the title to Francesco Bagnai by just 9 points), the Portugese national is deserving of the promotion to MotoGP.
His debut year will be a challenge. Everything about MotoGP is different to what he has been used to - brakes, electronics, power, you name it – but there is no doubt he has the skills and ability to make it work. As Miguel said himself...’This is just the start of the journey!’
