Now into is his fourth year in MotoGP, all being Suzuki mounted, Alex Rins has a real self belief and confidence that he can be a frequent visitor to the podium during 2020.
Last season was his strongest to date in the Premier class, placing an impressive 4th overall. Potentially it could have been higher had he been sharper during qualifying, only at Assen did he make the front row ( ironically, crashing out of the race whilst leading). However his season was highlighted with two brilliant victories.
He took his maiden MotoGP win at the America’s round, withstanding non stop pressure from Valentino Rossi over the final four laps to cross the line ahead by 0.462sec. His second victory, at Silverstone, was to be even more amazing.
Mistakenly attacking Marc Marquez one lap too early, Rins thought that he had blown it. But with echo’s of the memorable last corner Sheene/Roberts finish of 1979, the Suzuki man hit back over the final corner by nipping up the inside of Marquez to squeeze victory by 0.013sec. (Was the 4th closest finish in premier class history).
If he can improve his qualifying, then Alex Rins should be a serious challenger for the Championship this year.
Team mate Joan Mir stays with the Suzuki Ecstar Team for a second term following an impressive maiden MotoGP season, despite suffering a 150mph crash whilst testing at Brno in August which put him out of both the Austrian & British Grand Prix. His latter season form was superb, eventually placing 12th overall in the final standings, including 9 finishes inside the top 8, with a best of 5th at Philip Island.
With the Suzuki GSX-RR widely regarded as being MotoGP’s best all round machine, the former Moto3 World Champion can look forward to even stronger results in 2020 and could well see the 23 year old (turns 24 in September), challenging for podiums.
