SUZUKI ECSTAR

SUZUKI ECSTAR

Now into it’s fifth year back racing in MotoGP, Team Suzuki Ecstar opts for two young Spanish riders for their 2019 line up.

Alex Rins, having ridden the GSX-RR for the past two years, is promoted to become ‘lead rider’, whilst fellow countryman Joan Mir, moves up from Moto2 to make his debut in the ‘big league’. A lot is expected of Rins by Suzuki. After placing a magnificent 5th overall in last years championship (which included 5 podiums), Rins sets his target for this term as nothing short of regular podiums, including a visit or two to the top step. Rins knows that Suzuki have only recorded just one race win since their return to MotoGP, and that was Maverick Vinales brilliant ‘lights to flag’ display at Silverstone in 2016. The man from Barcelona dreams of adding to that single victory….and with luck, could well make it a reality!

Less will be expected of Joan Mir, in this his maiden year in the premier class. He is seen by Suzuki more as an investment for the future. At 22 years (he turns 23 in September), the 2017 Moto3 World Champion who last year finished 6th and Rookie of the Year in the Moto2 World Series, will be given time to adapt in this his MotoGP learning year. He will undoubtedly get faster as the season progresses, and by mid season should be strong enough to be challenging for top 6 finishes.
